Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Христос воскрес! Воістину воскрес!
A blessed and wonderful Mother’s Day to you!
Years ago, there occurred an unseen act of sacrifice which the person in question probably thought nobody we would recall 150 years later. It involved a young woman in South Wales, UK. She was making her way across the hills of that a windswept- stretch of land on a cold winter day when she was caught in a horrible blizzard. She never reached her destination and when the blizzard had subsided her body was found by searchers beneath a mound of snow. But, the discovered that before her death, she had taken off all her outer clothing and wrapped it about her baby. When they unwrapped the child, to their great surprise and joy, they found he was alive and well. She had mounded her body over his and given her life for her child, proving the depths of her motherly love. Years later that child, David Lloyd George, grown to manhood, became prime minister of Great Britain, and, without a doubt, one of England’s greatest statement in the 20th century.
Do you see the lasting influence a mother can have? Implanted deep in our soul is that early memory of unfailing love, self-sacrificing love, which our mothers pass on to us. Take a moment this day to say a prayer for your mother in gratitude for sheltering you from the storms of life during your early years, and for sharing with you the gift of life.
As Mr. George’s mother protected him in that fateful blizzard in the 1860’s, so too our Mother, Mary, protects us throughout our lives. Like the infant in the above story we are too young and green in our earthly life to fully comprehend the extent of her protective love and care for those of us who love her Son, Jesus the Lord. One day when we grow up and see her we will realize all that she has done to keep us warm in this world of darkness, how she has protected us and sheltered us with the clothing of her spiritual garment. In gratitude for all she does for us, join us each Tuesday in May in the church at 12 noon for a Rosary.
In the Risen Christ, Jason, priest and sinner.
